Genomen uyt de oude historien ende nieuwelijks tot profijt der jongheyd oversien, by een vergadert ende seer verbetert. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Antwerpen, Joh. Petrus Willemsens, (ca. 1760). 4to. Wrappers made of a vellum manuscript leaf. With woodcut on title and 10 woodcuts in text. 56 pp. Combined edition of three popular romances with female heroines, in the Southern Netherlands published together, and in the Northern Netherlands mostly published separately. The combined editions in the Southern Netherlands contained the chapbook and schoolbook versions of "the Patient Helena", "the Sweet Griseldis", and "the Faithful Florentine", all based on popular mediaeval romances. The sweet Griseldis was a shepherdess from Piemont who was accepted in marriage in about 1003 by the Marquis of Saluzzo on condition that she would unconditionally follow all his orders. She was then most cruelly tested by her husband, but always remained her sweet self. The story was told by Boccaccio in his "Decamerone" and translated into Latin by Petrarca. On this Latin version both the French and Flemish chapbook versions were based. The last story, about the faithful Florentine is based upon a popular legend about the popular belief that the shirt of a man will stay white and clean as longas his wife remains faithful to him. The large woodcut on title shows the portraits of the three women, Helena depicted as a queen, Griseldis as a bourgeois-woman, and Florentine as a pilgrim. This woodcut is repeated at the head of the second story, and at the head of the third story a much older variant is used. The woodcut at the head of the first story shows a woman in a long chair in a big room feeding the child on her lap. The approbation at the end is dated Antwerp, 1621. Fine copy.- (Outer margin of title sl. soiled due to the shortness of the vellum wrappers).
