Early American imprint

CHAMBAUD, Louis.
Fables choisies, à l'usage des enfans, et des autres personnes qui commencent à apprendre la langue Françoise, avec un index alphabétique de tous les mots traduits en Anglois.

Baltimore, Warner & Hanna, 1810. 12mo. Modern half calf, gilt title on spine. vi, 7-165, (3) pp.

Early American imprint of a very popular textbook for (American) children to learn the French language by Louis Chambaud (d. 1776). The first edition appeared in 1751, followed by dozens editions till the 1860's. The first American edition probably was published in Philadelphia in 1784. This is the only edition printed in Baltimore.
According to Chambaud, fables were particularly suitable for teaching languages to young children, because of the simple language and the moral lesson. In the present work Chambaud used fables of Aesop, Phaedrus and others, preceded by an English preface and  followed by a French-English dictionary ('An alphabetical index of all the words contained in the fables', pp. 100-65), and a list of other books published by Warner & Hanna.
Our copy was a present of F. Farifax to his son Edwin C. Farifax, dated 1 July 1818.
Fair copy, with ownership's entry on first fly-leaf of S. Lathich.- (Sl. foxed).
