A pleasure to read
CHALMERS, George.Political Annals of the Present United Colonies, from their Settlement to the Peace of 1763: Compiled chiefly from Records, and authorised often by the Insertion of State-Papers. Book I. ![]() London, Printed for the Author, sold by J. Bowen, 1780. 4to. Contemporary calf, with the gilt supralibros of the Signet Library on both sides. (10), 695 pp. First edition, all published, of a political and economical description of the United Colonies: Virginia, New-England, Massachusets, Maryland, Rhode-Island, Connecticut, New-Hampshire and Main, Carolina, New York, and Pennsylvania. The Scottish political writer George Chalmers (1742-1825) was a strong supporter of the right of England to tax the Colonies, so every fact in favour of this tax-right was studiously brought forward. Still the work is of great interest for early American history as it presents a large number of authentic documents and is full of valuable details. Furthermore, the book is elegantly written and still a pleasure to read. Nice copy.- (First and last leaves foxed).
