Charming American edition, nicely illustrated with hand-coloured plates, of a popular manual on the drawing room dances, fashionable at the time. The book was first published in French at Paris, with illustrations by Gavarni, in 1847, and in English at London in the same year. The book teaches young people to dance the Quadrille, Polka, various Waltzes, Mazurka, the Waltz-Mazurka, called the Cellarius, the Redowa and Cotillon. At the end some of the latest dances are added as well, like the Varsovienne, Esmeralda, Polka-Redowa, Polka Quadrille, Waltz Quadrille, etc. The author was a dancing master at Paris and specialized in waltzes. He intended the present book to lie on every piano in the drawing room and stimulate young people to dance.

Nice copy.- (Spine discoloured and sl. dam. at top and bottom).
Derra de Moroda 576 (Paris and London ed. of 1847); Magriel p. 96 (idem).
