Amsterdam, Jean Neaulme, 1757. Small folio. Contemporary boards with ms title on frontcover. With title printed in red and black, several woodcut borders and head- and tailpieces, and 10 full-page engraved plates after drawings by Rembrandt illustrating the story of Joseph. (26) pp.

First edition of the biblical story of Joseph told by Anne Claude Philippe, Comte de Caylus (1692-1765), and beautifully illustrated with engraved plates after the great 17th century Dutch painter Rembrandt, proving the artist's renewed fame well into the 18th century. The author states in his preface that the present work is of interest for young people, not only because of the story, which from old was an example for children, but also because of the beautiful plates illustrating the story. He is convinced it will stimulate and develop the artistic taste of children.
The ten drawings by Rembrandt show Joseph explaining dreams, Joseph being thrown into the well, Joseph sold by his brothers, Jacob  prostate with grief by the sight of Joseph's discarded garments, the capture of Joseph, Joseph accused by Potiphar's wife, Joseph in prison, Joseph explaining the dreams of the Pharao, Joseph as governor of Egypt, and Joseph recognised by his brothers. An exceptional beautiful and most interesting children's book.
