Rare first edition of a famous and original treatise on perspective by the prominent mathematician and theorist of perspective Salomon de Cauls.
Cauls was renowned as an inventor of mechanical contrivances, both utilitarian and entertaining. His present work clearly explains and depicts all aspects of perspectival problems, including intricate projections and optical illusions, the perspectival drawing of shadows and the miroring of objects, etc. Including illustrations of an ingenious perspectival instrument, a fortified city, a guitar in perspective, a corinthian capital, a garden design, a 17th century interior, and a complex and transparant polygon;the 12th full-page engraving is pasted over a wrongly placed nr. 17 which is also printed in its proper place; two engravings are pasted in.

Re-backed; traces of use. A fine copy of this famous perspective work.
Berlin Kat. 4706; Millard, French 268; Vagnetti EIIIb7: 'Opera molto chiara' (splendid work); cf. Kemp, The Science of Art, p. 183; not in Fowler.
