Nineteenth-century brown morocco, ribbed spine with red title-label lettered in gold, gilt binding edges and inner dentelles, polished gilt edges, marbled endpapers. With 3 finely engraved allegorical frontispieces (one for each part), engraved and typographical head- and tail-pieces, engraved initials. xvi, 96, (2), 97-168, (2), 169-344 pp. Beutiful fifth edition of the works by these three most important Roman lyrical and elegical poets of the first century BC: Gaius Valerius Catullus (84-55 BC), Albius Tibullus (54-19 BC), and Sextus Propertius (50-15 BC). The first edition of these works edited by Nicolas Lenglet Dufresnoy (1674-1755) had appeared in 1742 with the same publisher. The second edition (1743) also was published in Leiden. The works of Catullus (pp. 1-88) are preceded by a bibography of Catulles by Giov. Corradino dall'Aglio (pp. vii-ix) and followed by an edition of the poam 'Per vigilim Veneris', sometimes attributed to Catullus (pp. 89-96). The works of Tibullus (pp. 103-168) are preceded by two short biographies by Petrus Crinitus and Maitaire (pp. 99-102), and those of Propertius (pp. 171-304) By a biography by Crinitus. On pp. 305-36 follow the Fragmenta by Gaius Cornelius Gallus and the Elegiarum Libellus by Maximianus, which had been attributed to Gallus. Our copy is important as it belonged to the library of the famous French book collector Eugène Paillet (1829-1901), one of the greatest tastemakers of late 19th century French bibliophily (Henri Beraldi (and Eugene Paillet), Bibliothèque d'un bibliophile 1865-1885 (collection of Eugene Paillet) [with] Mes estampes 1872-1884 (collection of Henri Beraldi) (Lille 1885-87). Gorgeous copy in bibliophile binding from the library of Eugène Paillet (1829-1901), councellor at the Court of Paris: his book plate is pasted to the verso of the first fly-leaf: an owl and his motto 'Mente libera'. With the bookplate of 'JCCT' on the verso of the front cover.
