First edition of the most important work by 'Father Cats'
CATS, Jacob.'s Werelts begin, midden, eynde besloten in den trou-ringh, met den proef-steen van den selven. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Dordrecht, Mathias Havius, 1637. 4to. 18th century half calf with red morocco title-label on spine. Tiltle in red & black 3 engraved frontispieces of which one a double-page. 2 engraved portraits, one of Anna Maria Schurmans and one of Jacob Cats. 51 engravings in text. Some woodcut initials and end pieces. (31), 772; (10), 136 pp. First edition of this perhaps most important work by the famous Dutch poet Jacob Cats (1577-1660), who next to an important political career in the Dutch Republic, grew into such a popular poet that he became generally known as 'Father Cats', whose Collected works were, next to the Dutch translation of the Bible, present in almost every house in the protestant Northern Netherlands during its Golden Age. In this poetical work he treats all kinds of human life and behavior, all aspects of human society from the beginning of the world to the end, summarized in one symbol: marriage, not only the human marriage, but also the spiritual marriage of Christ and the Church, his bride. Added at the end under separate half-title: Lof-Sang op het Geestelick Houwelick van Godes Sone (Laudatory Song on the Spiritual Marriage of the Son of God). Specific cases of all sorts of marriage are given in verse, followed by discussions in prose, which are printed in smaller type in two columns. The examples are taken from the bible, like the marriage of Adam and Eve, Jacob with Lea and Rachel, David and Abigail, etc., but also from classical and modern authors, like the marriage of Cyrus and Aspasia, Antonius and Cleopatra, a shepherdess marrying a king, a Spanish nobleman marrying a gypsy girl, etc. Included are poems and discussions about marriage after rape, the breaking of promises of marriage, adultery, etc.; and also songs about love and death, the spinster-market, etc. are added. Cats has his texts translated by the famous Neo-Latin poet ans Amsterdam Professor Caspar Barlaeus, which translation was published in 1643 (=1644) with the title Faces Augustae. Good copy. -(First frontispiece restored).
