Amst., Adam Meyer, (ca. 1780). Sm.8vo. Orig. blue wrappers. With woodcut of a black hen within ornamental borders on title. (56) pp.

Popular school catechism, a primer really, printed in different types, although mainly in Gothic. On verso title within a woodcut frame the following verse is found: "De Vreeze des Heeren, zo Salomon zeyd, Die is het beginzel  van alle Wysheid" (The fear of God, as Salomon said, is the foundation of all wisdom). At the end a double series of numbers, in Roman and in Arabic types, is given. Probably in very strict calvinist schools the book was used as an A B C book too, and probably it then was the only book used, as the very strict calvinists wanted nothing in their children's hands other than the "Word of God".

Good copy of a rare popular book.- (Browned).
This ed. not in Van der Haar, Schatkamer; cf. Waller 385 (Rotterdam ed. of 1790); Muller 961 (other Amst. ed. of ca. 1780); Bibelebontse Berg p. 600, (Utrecht ed. by Kemink of ca. 1780).
