Breda, W. van Bergen, (ca. 1810). Catchpenny print. Folio. With 2 large woodcuts of horse carriages, an open summer carriage on two wheels above, and a closed winter carriage on four wheels drawn by two horses below, with a coachman in front and a groom standing on the axle at the back, both woodcuts only barely touched with red.

Rare unrecorded catchpenny print published by Willem van Bergen in Breda. This print, numbered 14, is not known to De Meyer. Willem van Bergen, a protestant printer active in Breda between 1784 and 1818, started a series of catchpenny prints together with W.G. van de Sande from Amsterdam in about 1805-1806. They were based on 18th century traditional prints, mostly copied from Stichter, and Willem van Bergen had also taken over many blocks from the Heirs of the Widow J. van Egmont, after the firm was closed down in 1804. Prints with carriages or sledges were intended to teach children the various means of transport. Here each woodcut has two four-line verses underneath.

Fine copy, printed on strong handmade paper.
Not in De Meyer; on the subject, see De Meyer pp. 598-599.
