(2), 422, 234, 52, 32 pp. First and only edition of this rare and early work on China, Japan, Siam (Thailand) and Tonkin (Vietnam), Burma, Laos, Thibet etc. by the French author Jean Castillon (1718-1799). The first part of the work is on China, which contains descriptions of the history of the country from 2941 BC, its religion, military history and customs. At the end of this part a chapter is devoted to the production of Chinese silk (pp. 339-69), followed by a section on Chinese porcelain (pp. 370-422). The second part is on the history and the customs of Japan, with a description of its foreign trade, namely with Holland. The third part describes the kingdoms of Siam, Tonkin and Cochinchin, followed by a section titled Anecdotes de la presqu'isle au dela du Gange with anecdotes on Azem, Ava, Pegu, Laos, Arakan, Boulau, Tipra, Tibet, Malacca, and Cambodia. Castillon wrote several works, which were usually published anonymously, and he was editor for historical and literary periodicals. Good copy.- (Top and lower part of spine damaged, corners bumped).
