The wreck of the Aerd van Nes

CARSJENS, F.M.
Het vergaan van het Nederlandsch fregatschip Aerd van Nes, benevens de lotgevallen der bemanning, bij haar jammerlijk rondzwerven gedurende bijna zes maanden.

Amsterdam, Gebroeders Kraay, 1855. 8vo. Original printed wrappers. VIII, 91 pp.

First edition of an account of the wreck of the Dutch frigate "Aerd van Nes" near Middlebank reef on the 17th of April 1854. The frigate left Holland on the 4th of August 1853 to Liverpool to start a journey to Sydney, Australia. On the 16th of February the ship and crew arrived safely in Sydney after a journey of more than 100 days. The journey continued towards Java through the Strait Torres, which was a dangerous and not entirely discovered route.
Near Middlebank Reef the frigate hit the reef after a long struggle of the captain and crew to prevent a crash. The crew had already prepared the life boats, but due to the current and waves the crew hardly managed to keep the water out. After 12 hours of hard rowing against the current, they reached at last the north point of the reef. After this disaster the crew had to spend another six months to arrive safely on the coast of Teboengkoe, eastern Celebes (Sulawesi) and afterwards in Soerabaya on the eastern side of the island of Java on the 3rd of November.
During this long and difficult trip, going from island to island, they suffered much from encounters with natives, illness and other tragedies, and several members of the crew died. Early January 1855 the captain and most of the crew embarked on different ships to return to the Netherlands.
