First Antwerp enlarged edition of an extensive work on the history of the papal Councils from the days of St. Peter up till pope Julius III (1550-55) that was first published by Carranza (1503-1576) in Venice in 1546. The most important texts that resulted from these Counsils are printed together with Carranza's extensive comments. The author was an important Dominican theologian and jurist at the court of Emperor Charles V and worked for some time as an inquisitor in the Low Countries. In 1558 he was ordained archbishop of Toledo by Philip II. However, a year later he was accused of heresy and imprisoned for seven years.
