First edition of the translation into French by Mme. Keralio Robert of this highly interesting travel account through Holland and along the Rhine till Darmstadt, written by John Carr, made after the original English edition, A tour through Holland, along the right and left banks of the Rhine to the south of Germany, in de summer and autumn of 1806 (London, for Richard Phillips, 1807). The 12 fine plates are according to the translator's preface engraved by William Daniell Jr., in England, after the drawings by the author; in fact they are copies in stipple-engraving after the aquatints by William Daniel Jr. in the original edition. The French editor only selected twelve of the 20 original aquatints, also leaving out the map of the Rhine.
This travel account deserved attention because it gives, next to the description of the places visited (Rotterdam, Delft, The Hague, Leiden, Haarlem, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Zeist, Arnhem. Düsseldorf, Bonn, Andernach, Koblenz, St. Goar, Bacharach, Offenbach till Darmstadt), lively reports on the history of Holland, the habits of the inhabitants - such as their love for smoking and coffee drinking -, the Dutch theatre, Dutch painting, including interesting stories on the great painters of the Golden Age (Rembrandt, Frans Hals, etc.), and the Herrenhuthers, the Zinzendorff brotherhood at Zeist.

Sir John Carr (1772-1832) was called to the bar at the Middle Temple, but from reasons of health he found it advisable to travel and he has published several accounts of his journeys in different European countries. These travel accounts obtained a wide circulation on account of their light, gossipy style.

Good set.- (Some occ. spotting, not affecting plates).
