Very rare incunable edition of the 49 penitential Lenten or Fasten sermons by the Franciscan preacher Roberto Caracciolo (1425-1495), Bishop of Aquino, and of Lecce.
Caracciolus (d. 1475) was the most celebrated preacher in Italy during the last half of the 15th century. Called a "second Paul", the "new Paul", and the "prince of preachers", he was able to arouse his listeners to sometimes unseemly levels of emotion, and partly for that reason, he was a controversial figure among the Franciscans of his time. He was one of the first authors in history to see his printed writings become best-sellers, some evidence of which can be seen in the fact that  there were at least five editions printed in 1472 of the present collection of Lenten sermons; the first was issued by Vindelinus de Spira in Venice, the second by Schweynheym and Pannartz in the same year.
The printer of our edition, Tomasso di Piasi in Venice is only known for ten 4to. tracts in the vernacular.

Dampstained throughout, some wormholes in inner margins. Fair copy, with ownership's entries in ms. in ink on title and verso title (errased: "Di me Carlo Ri...valla"), on title: "Capuccini di Gavone 1641" and f.2 r: "Conventtus Sa. Bernardini Epporedi (?)"; contemporary annotations and a contents on the last blank in 16th-century handwriting.
