Bij gelegenheid van het teekenen en overleveren hunner requesten, ter kloekmoedige volvoering van hun voorneemen. Door een vryman. Kampen, R. D. Zee, 1782. Unbound. 8vo. 16 pp. Ad 1: One of the first editions of this famous pamphlet Aan het Volk van Nederland [To the People of the Netherlands], dated Ostende, 3rd of September 1781, vigorously opposed to the House of Orange in general and to Stadholder William V in particular, while advocating the establishment of a Dutch Republic independent of the House of Orange, a take over by independent burghers and a free press. In the night of 25 to 26 September 1781 the pamphlet was distributed from blinded coaches in many Dutch cities. Soon the Dutch people became acquainted with this anonymous pamphlet, which immediately made a profound impression and would go down in history as the leading programme of the Dutch patriots. The States-General promptly banned it and issued a reward of 14,000 guilders for anyone who would name the author or printer. Other authorities followed suit. However, another 110 years were to pass before the author was unmasked: Joan Derk van der Capellen tot den Pol (1741-1784). The pamphlet was soon translated into English, German and French. It is not completely clear yet which edition (of the three or four earliest editions can be regarded the first. Our copy has the same collation (A-I4, K2), fingerprint(A2: ely; K1: e), and variant on p. 2 (A1v), line 21 'Lieden, die onder ...') as in the first copy listed in the catalogue of teh Royal Library, The Hague. The variant on p. 42, line 5 ('landggenoten') is identical with Knuttel 19865. On the first page (p.2, A1v) an indentation of 3 lines at the beginning (for the initial 'I') in stead of 2 in the available reproductions of the first edition. Added are three works relating to Johan Derk van der Capellen: (2) A panegyric for Joan Derk van der Capellen pronounced on 16 August 1784 in the Bethlehem Church at Zwolle during a commemorative service on the occasion of Van der Capellen's death by the French minister at Zwolle Isaac du Puy; (2) a translation by Joan Derk van der Capellen from the French into Dutch of a religious treatise on Psalm 5 by the same Isaac du Puy; and (3) a pamphlet, probably written by Joan Derk van der Capellen directed to the burghers of the Province of Overijssel. Some pages misbound of ad 1; first leaf loose of ad 3. Good copies.
