Sm.8vo (87 x 145 mm). Later three-quarter vellum, marbled boards. Engraved title, engraved author's portrait. 159 (1) pp. Very famous pamphlet against the House of Orange by Joan Derk van der Capellen tot den Pol, first printed as Aan het volk van Nederland and a.o. spread by the Leyden patriotic preacher F.A. van der Kemp in the Dutch cities in 1781. The pamphlet highly criticises the lobbying for political reason of the governors and the weak policy of Willem V. It made a great impression, but was prohibited by the States General in October 1781. There was a reward of 14.000 guilders for the person who could identify the writer or printer. The pamphlet was nevertheless reprinted under the title Bylage tot de Vaderlandsche geschiedenis door Jan Wagenaar. English, German en French translations soon followed. The French translation of 1787, Le despotisme de la maison d'Orange prouvé par l'histoire, was on its turn translated again in Dutch as De heerschzucht van het huis van Oranje, gestaafd door de geschiedenis. Joan Derk van der Capellen tot den Pol (Tiel 1741- Zwolle 1784) was a Dutch politician and nobleman who played an important role in the patriotic movement. He supported the American revolution and criticised the political establishment. It could be proven by the historian Loosjes in 1891 that van der Capellen tot den Pol was the author of this pamflet. Fine copy.- (Ms. annotations in ink and pencil on first blank).
