Paris, H.J. Jansen, 1791. 8vo. 19th century red morocco, spine ribbed and gilt, sides with blind stamped fillet and floral borders, g.e. (PEETERS, Antwerpen). (2), 522, (10) pp.

First edition of the memoirs of the Dutch patriot Robert Jasper van der Capellen van der Marsch (1743-1841). After the fourth Dutch-English war (1780-1784) more and more people, better known as patriots, expressed their pro-French sentiments and agitated against the power of the stadtholders. A very intense patriot was R.J. van der Capellen, who was blic and in favour of the French. In 1787 an armed Prussian intervention reinstated the full power of the stadtholder Willem V and Van der Capellen escapalready warned several times for his severe statements against the Repued to France. The Court of Gelderland sentenced him to death during his absence in 1788. A few years later this sentence was withdrawn again. He published his memoirs in 1791. In the same year the French edition was published.

Good copy.
