First and only separate edition of a collection of 'variae lectiones' on Greek and Latin classical authors by Theodorus Canterus (Dirk Canter; 1545-1617) from Utrecht, a Dutch patrician, humanist, scholar, and younger brother of the celebrated Dutch philologist Guilielmus (Willem) Canter (1542-1575). The present variae lectiones are much in the same style as those published in much larger numbers by his brother Willem. The text was reprinted by Janus Gruterus in his Lampas, sive fax artium liberalium, vol. 2 (Frankfurt 1603), pp. 712-72. The book is finely printed in Italics, with quotations in Greek type, and is dedicated to Georgius Rataller (1528-1581), a well-known Utrecht jurist, poet, and philologist and President of the Utrecht Court. Theodorus Canter was born in 1545 and lived for the most part of his life in Utrecht. Around 1565-8 he made the usual Grand Tour, during which he studied in Paris under Auratus and Lambinus. After his return to Utrecht he held a seat in the magistracy from 1575, as a member of the liberal regent class; in 1589 till 1593 he was burgomaster several times. After the troubles in 1610, and he became burgomaster of Utrecht in 1598. But in 1611 he was banished from the city, after which he went to Leeuwarden, where, six years later, he died. The famous Scaliger wrote on Canter and this book (Scaligerana, ed. 1740, p. 254): "Il a une bibliotheque comlete. J'ay donné à Canterus mes corrections sur fragmenta Poetarum. Il y a de bonnes choses dans ses Variae lectiones. J'ay profite beaucoup. C'est un beau labeur quamvis non doctus. Il a leu tous les auteurs Grecs pour recueillir cela". Provenance: (1) The book has been in the possession of the celebrated Arnoldus Buchelius (1565-1641), a Utrecht jurist, historian, genealogist, philologist, and book collector, who wrote his ownership's entry on verso of last leaf: "Sum Arnoldi Buchelii et Amicorum omnium", and made some marginal annotations. (2) The gilt coat-of-arms on the binding with the legend "J. Gomez de la Cortina et Amicorum", and with the later engraved bookplate of the Bibliotheca Cortina pasted to the inside of the front cover. Good copy with a very interesting provenance.- (Binding sl. rubbed).
