Extremely rare series of 18 beautiful hand-coloured lithographs of original theatre scenery designs for the Real Teatro San Carlo, by Pasquale Canna (1790-1874). Canna was a distinguished, prolific, neo-classical scene-painter who made a career as a painter and scenographer in Parma, Venice, Milan and Naples, where he worked for the well-known theatres as La Scala (Milan) and The San Carlo and the Teatro del Fondo in Naples. Only two series of lithographs by Canna are known, one with sketches for designs at La Scala and the other one being the present series.
All plates have strikingly ornamental details and beautifully depicted skies. The skies are sometimes friendly in light blue, sometimes dark with the menace of a terrible storm. The rendering of light and shadow is subsequently very detailed and specific as well.
Each of the 18 designs has a specific handwritten caption below and the dedication: Dedicato alla Maesta di Donna Maria Cristina Regina di Spagna e delle Indie, repeated below every plate. The specific caption locates and defines the scene.

Very fine copy of a rare series of original Italian theatre designs.
Enciclopedia dello Spettacolo records copies in Biblioteca Corsini and Biblioteca Bucardo; RLIN lists no copies.
