Indispensable to the 'De Bry & Thévenot' collectors
CAMUS, Armand Gaston.Memoire sur la collection des grandes et petites voyages et sur la collection des voyages de Melchisedech Thenevot. ![]() ![]() Paris, Baudouin, Imprimeur de l'Institut National, 1802. Large 4to. Contemporary marbled boards with title label on spine. With woodcut printer's vignette on title. (8), 401, (2) pp. Rare bibliographical study on the collection of 'Big and Small Voyages', published by Johann Theodor de Bry at the beginning of the 17th century, consisting of the travel accounts known at the time of voyages to the East- and West-Indies. The volumes describing the voyages to the East-Indies were somewhat larger than those describing the voyages to the West-Indies, hence the distinction between 'big' and 'small' voyages. The collection is rarely found complete or in the correct composition of the parts. So, the author set himself the task to describe the collection exactly and in all details, including the maps and plates, as well as analyzing the contents. The author used the Mémoire also for his lectures and his students advised him to add the voyages of Thevenot to his Mémoire. The 'Institut National' paid for the printing. An extensive index is added at the end. Armand Gaston Camus (1740-1804), was a lawyer and played an important role in the Revolution of 1789. He was elected delegate of the 'Convention Nationale', member of the 'Conseil de Cinq-cents', and of the 'Institut Nationale'. He was appointed archivist of the 'Assemblée' and occupied himself almost exclusively with finance and the public domain. The collection described here was the property of the 'Institut Nationale', later the 'Bibliothèque Nationale' at Paris. The Mémoire represents a rare and indispensable reference work to the world. Fine large-paper copy.
Brunet I, 1529; Sabin 10328 ('an excellent specimen of bibliographical analysis'); Chadenat 538; Harisse, p. XXIII.
