With 8 illustrations on 4 engraved plates, all nicely coloured by hand. 143, (1 blank) pp. Second edition of the popular travel book for children by Joachim Heinrich Campe. The present edition is as well produced and as finely illustrated as the first edition but the structure of the book slightly changed. Now the title on the title-page is much shortened, and the two voyages are here mentioned on separate half-titles, as follows: "Noordelijke Ontdekkingsreis van Jacob Heemskerk en Willem Barendsz" (Northern Voyages of Exploration of Jacob van Heemskerk and Willem Barendsz), and: "Merkwaardige Lotgevallen van vier Russische Bootslieden, op Spitsbergen. Een aanhangsel tot het voorgaande Verhaal" (Curious Adventures of Four Russian Sailors on Spitsbergen. An Addition to the former Story). All Campe's educational books were very popular in The Netherlands, but they now are very rare as well. Fine uncut copy.
