First illustrated edition
CAMPE, Joachim Heinrich.Belangrijke reisverhalen. ![]() ![]() ![]() 2e druk. Amst., M. Westerman & Zoon, (ca. 1830). Sm. 8vo. Orig. boards. With illustration of Patagonians on engraved title, coloured by hand, and 2 full-page engraved plates by D. Sluijter after J. Steyn. (2), 249 pp. Second Dutch edition, but the first illustrated edition, of one of the popular travel books for children by the great German school reformer Joachim Heinrich Campe (1746-1818). Campe had been private teacher to the Humboldts, and later became director of the Philanthropinum at Dessau. He wrote a large number of children's educational books of which "Robinson Crusoe der Jüngere" became the most popular. Campe's travel books for children, the importance of which was fully discussed in the preface to "Die Entdeckung Amerikas", had originally been published from 1785 to 1793 in 12 volumes under the title: "Sammlung interessanter und durchgängig zweckmässig abgefasster Reisebeschreibungen für die Jugend". Under the title "Reisbeschrijvingen voor de Jeugd", Dutch translations had been published in five volumes from 1786 to 1804 by the Widow J. Dòll at Amsterdam. But not all was included and the arrangement had been different, for instance volume 5 of the Dutch translation containing the story of Carver's voyage through North-America, which in the original series was volume 4 and accompanied by another short story. Our volume now contains the new Dutch translation of part of the third volume of the German series, with the accounts of two circumnavigations, one by Captain Byron undertaken in the years 1764 to 1766, and the other by Captain Samuel Wallis, undertaken directly after Byron's return in 1766. Good copy of a rare school book.- (Boards stained; spine loose).
Unrecorded. Not in Waller, Cat. Van Rijn, Cat. De Koning, etc. not in Saalmink cf. Buijnsters, BNK, 516 (5 vols. of ed. 1786-1804); Wegehaupt I, 340 (6 of the 12 vols. of the first edition of 1785-1793), and 341 (complete set of 12 vols. of a variant ed. of 1785-1793 in sl. larger size than the first) ad the author, see: Bibelebontse Berg p. 194, et passim.
