English translation of the Dutch adaptation of Richardson's Clarissa

CAMBON [-VAN DE WERKEN, Maria Geertuida DE].
Letters and Conversations between several Young Ladies, on Interesting and Improving Subjects. Translated from the Dutch, with Alterations and Improvements.

London, Printed for C. Dilly, 1792. Contemp. half morocco. (4), 414, (2) pp.

Rare first edition of the English translation of the free Dutch adaptation for children of Richardson's "Clarissa" by Maria Geertuida de Cambon - Van der Werken (1734-after 1796). First published in 1790 as a counterpart for girls to "De kleine Grandisson", it shared the same fame of its own. Both were translated in English by John Hall, an English teacher at the townschool of Rotterdam. As Hall explains in his preface, "De Kleine Clarissa" by Mrs. De  Cambon had changed so much after having been adapted for children as well as to typical Dutch circumstances, that it had become an entirely new and usefull book for English children. And to avoid any connection at all with Richardson's  work, the English translator changed the names of people and places, and also made some further alterations. So Richardson's "Clarissa" twice changed completely, first in Dutch, and then again in English.

Good copy, with the bookplate of Benjamin Baker Galbraith.- (Binding rubbed, fronthinge broken; two lower corners torn off, one with loss of a few letters; some sl. foxing).
This English translation not in Dutch collections; cf. Bibelebontse Berg, pp. 213-214 (on the Dutch edition).
