Second and best edition of the free Dutch adaptation for children of Samuel Richardson's popular novel "The History of Sir Charles Grandison". This adaptation by the Dutch poetess and popular author, Mrs. de Cambon-van der Werken, earned such a fame of its own, that it presently was re-translated into English, no longer recognized as being Richardson's. "De kleine Grandisson", first published in 1782, was the first Dutch novel in letters for children, the novel in letters for adults only having been introduced in the Netherlands by Wolff & Deken, with "Sara Burgerhart" in the same year. "De kleine Grandisson" was a typical example of children's "enlightment" literature and no Dutch children's book found such international response, and in the Netherlands itself it was easily the most popular of the period. Within a century the book was eighty times republished.

Good copy of a rare children's book.- (Binding sl. rubbed, spine dam.).
