Anthoine de la Calancha, docteur Augustin en l'université de Lima & imprimée en Espagnol à Barcelone l'an 1639. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Toulouse, F. Bonde, 1653. 4to. Contemporary vellum. Engraved title. (10), 26, (2), 482, (8) pp. First edition in French of very rare and important account of the foundation of churches and religious houses and the conversion of the local people in Peru by members of the Augustinian Order. Antonio de Calancha (1584-1654), born in la Plata, Bolivia, earned a doctorate at the university of San Marcos in Lima and became a famous preacher in the Peruvian convents of his order. In his life he travelled a lot, only in Peru, for he never left his country, and during those travels he collected all kinds of natural, astrological, ethnographical, archeological and historical data which he used for his work. His Corónica Moralizada del orden de San Augustin en el Peru (Lima, 1638), was quite important for the study of seventeenth-century secular and religious colonial life and was especially significant for a better knowledge of the history and religion of the Peruvian coastal Indians. Calancha had an extra motive to convert the indians of South America: he had studied Adricomicus's topography of the Holy Land and derived from his illustrations the idea that Christ at his death on the cross was faced westwards, looking towards the land and the people that were chosen, especially by him, to be converted. The work was "one of the few historical writings about religion that was reedited in Spain (in 1639) and translated abroad, although in condensed versions". Both the Spanish and this French issue are rare. A supplement of 26 pages containing "Le martyre de venerable Pere Bernardin Deguisany (and) du venerable P. Alipe en Barbary" is added with distinct paging and signature marks. Both JCB and Sabin mention that it is bound after the main work, whereas in our copy it is found preceding the main text. Good copy, some ms. notes in ink on inside of front cover and on title.- (Binding sl. damaged, right lower corner of first blank teared off).

Americana, p. 442 ( both Spanish edition of 1638); see also Kupperman (ed.), America in European Consciousness 1493-1750, p. 96; S.
