Contemporary full mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments with red morocco title label with title lettered in gold, red painted edges, marbled endpapers. First edition of the French translation by Nicolas-Maurice Chompré (1750-1825), of this important work on trigonometry by Antonio Cagnoli (1743-1816), originally wrtitten in Italian under the title Trigonometria piana e sferica, published in Paris in the same year 1786 as the French translation. A second edition of the translation appeared in 1808. The book is refered to as a ' ... fu uns della migliori dell' epoca' and really sets the seal on his work. Cagnoli was a Venetian working in Verona where he had built his own observatory, and he was later appointed by Napoleon at the observatory in Milano.
