Second Aldine edition edited by Giovanni Giocondo (Johannes Iocundus Veronensis) of Julius Caesar's well-known work on Roman history: the wars and campaigns of conquest in France, Spain and Northern Africa. The first Aldus edition of Caesar's famous work was published in 1513 (Renouard, p. 60, nr. 1).
The edition is very beautifully and interestingly illustrated with two double-page woodcut maps, one of France and one of Spain and five full-page woodcut illustrations with key letters explained in the text by Giovanni Giocondo of bridges, fortified cities and military instruments used for sieges and defence: (1) a bridge built by Caesar over the Rhine, (2) Auriacum urbs, (3) Alexia oppidum, (4) Uxellodunum oppidum, and (5) Massilia. The subjects of the cuts are listed on the title-page.
Filippo Giunta's Florence Caesar edition of 1514 has free copies of the woodcuts which were used by Aldus in his first edition of 1513, adding also a double-page map of Spain. Our second edition has a new map of France, an added map of Spain, independent however, of the Giunta map, and the five 1513 cuts were replaced by new blocks copied from the Giunta edition.

The preface by Aldus - the same as in the first edition - starts on the verso of the title-page and ends on the following page (f. 2Ar), dated Venice, November 1513. On f. A2v-4r are the two double-page maps of France and Spain, followed by two alphabetical lists of Latin names of the cities, rivers and tribes of France and Spain as occurring the Caesar's work, with their French translations on f. A4v-6r; then on f. A6v-B4r (verso blank) the five full-page woodcuts with their explanations, and on B5r-7r the preface in the form of a letter to Julianus de Medici. The text is on f. 1-262v (a1-2k6v); 2k7 is blank, and on 2k8v is Aldus' printing device with the colophon "Venetiis in aedibus Aldi, et Andreae Soceri, mense Ianuario. M. D. XVIII"; the index is on f. 265r-296r (2ll1r-208r), ending with the colophon "Venetiis ... mense Novemb. M. D. XIX".

Last leaf remargined without loss of text; few stains; some old annotations in ink; 2 printer's devices and first full-page woodcut scratched with red crayon. Good copy with bookplate and ink ownership's entry of Mark J. Scearce, Shelbyville, Kentucy, and 18th-century ownership's entry of the painter G. Reggiani on the verso first flyleaf.
