First edition of the first complete Dutch translation of Julius Caesar's military commentaries by Abraham Bogaert (1663-1727), a Dutch poet, playwright, historian and collector of coins and medals, who also made several voyages to the Dutch East-Indies. Caesar's 'De Bello Gallico' had already been translated earlier, by Ioannes Fenacolius, or Vennecool, first published at Delft in 1614. The war in Gallia here takes up the whole first volume, and the civil wars most of the second volume, with at the end Caesar's wars in Alexandria and Africa added, in so far as the manuscripts survived.
The author had translated the work while travelling in the East without intention of publishing it, but on request of his friends it is now offered to the public. It was no doubt wellcomed by the pupils, and probably also by the teachers, of the Dutch Latin Schools. Caesar's 'De Bello Gallico' remained for centuries the first classical text beginning pupils of Latin Schools or Gymnasia had to study. The book is nicely illustrated, clearly showing the art of warfare at the time, and includes a fine view of the ancient Egyptian city Alexandria.
