With an original pasted-in photographical portrait of Buzacott with his signature underneath as a frontispiece, 7 full-page woodcut plates and some woodcut illustrations in the text. First edition of the memoires of the English missionary Aaron Buzacott (1800-1864), who was stationed on Rarotonga (one of the Cook islands) and visited amongst others Tahiti (pp. 16-22), Samoa (pp. 113-28), Australia (pp. 171, 201, 247) and several Polynesian islands (pp. 153-75), edited by J. P. Sunderland. The preface is written by Henry Allon.
Buzacott relates amongst others about his own education, his arrival at Rarotonga in 1828, the attempts and successes at converting the inhabitants, his work as a teacher, the hurricanes and famines during his stay, medical practice on the island, the establishment of a college, the chief of Rarotonga, named Makea, language and press, architecture, and his depart from the island in 1857. The work is concluded by several letters to Mrs. Buzacott written just after the death of her husband and in high estimation of him, and a list of diseases prevalent in the islands of the pacific.
