Leyden, Ex Off. Elzeviriana, 1633. 12mo. Contemp. red morocco, spine ribbed and richly gilt, with triple gilt filet borders on sides and gilt coat-of-arms with the order of the Golden Fleece in centre, g.e. With engraved allegorical title by C.C. Dusend. 575, (23) pp.

First edition of the collected works of Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq (1522-1592). The author studied at all the famous universities of his time, at Louvain, Paris, Venice, Bologna and Padua, in preparation of a diplomatic career. He accompanied Pedro Lasso de Castilla to England, and then was sent as ambassador to Constantinople by Ferdinand of Hungary, the brother of Charles V. He stayed at Constantinople almost eight years, rendering great services to the Empire and Christianity. When Busbecqius returned he was trusted with the education of Ferdinand's grandchildren, and in 1574 he was sent to France to serve the interest of the widow of Charles IX, Queen Elisabeth of Austria. Here he stayed till 1592, and on his way home he was assaulted by street robbers, and soon afterwards died.
All during his career Busbecqius wrote his travel accounts and reports in the form of letters to his employers. So the present collected edition contains the Legationis Turcicae Epistolae quattor, first published in 1605, as well as  the 53 letter he wrote to Rudolph II, first published in 1630. Of the present edition two variants are known, the first with the publisher's advice to the reader printed in 19 lines, and the second with the advice printed in 20 lines. Ours is the 19-line variant.

Good copy.- (Binding rubbed; front hinge loose).
