Folio. Half calf. With engraved illustrated title by Pris after M.J. Speeckaert, and illustrations of shell fossils on 32 colour-printed engraved plates, finished by hand. 152 pp. First edition of a beautiful shell book, with fine colour-printed plates, occasionally just touched with colour by hand. The plates were made by various artists including Daveaux, Pris, and Balconi. The book is dedicated to Marie Christine, Royal Princess of Hungary and Bohemia, and Albert, Royal Prince of Poland and Lithuania, Governor of the Southern Netherlands for Austria. François Xavier Burtin (1743-1818), a physician and natural historian, and a member of several European Academies, was renowned for his fine taste and his rich collections, including old master paintings like a Michelangelo. Burtin published a number of works on natural history, art, and the social history of his time, but the present was his most famous. Good uncut copy.- (Rebacked, binding sl. rubbed; title sl. soiled; occasionally some very sl. marginal foxing).
