Most valuable early bibliography of the Aldine Press
[BURGASSI, Antonio Cesare & Jacopo MORELLI].Serie dell'edizioni Aldine per ordine cronologico ed alphabetico. Seconda edizione con emendazioni e giunte. ![]() ![]() Padova, Pietro Brandolese, 1790. 12mo. Contemporary wrappers. With woodcut vignette on title. [8], 182, [1] pp. Important and very early chronological survey of the editions published by the Aldine Press (1494-1595). It is one of the very few early bibliographies on the output of a publishing house, the more interesting as it regards the famous Aldine Press of Aldus Manutius and his sons at Venice. The exhibition catalogue of the Grolier club, Bibliography. Its history and development (1984), describing the standard bibliography of the Aldine Press by A.A. Renouard, Annales de l'imprimerie des Alde, ou histoire des trois Manuce et de leurs éditions (3rd ed., Paris 1834), mentions Burgassi's bibliography with honour: "Although it (Renouard) had eighteenth-century precursors, these were of little value, except perhaps for Antonio Cesare Burgassi's Serie dell'edizioni Aldine (Pisa 1790), especially in its second edition, by Jacopo Morelli (Padua 1790)" (= the copy offered by us). An appendix by Santo Fattori was published in Padove, Pietro Bandolese,1803 and in the same year a third edition appeared in Florence, edited by F.L. Baroni. Fine uncut copy.
Ahmanson-Murphy, The Aldine Press 1185A; Besterman, Early printed books 1644; Breslauer & Folter Bibliography. Its history and development (Exhibition, Grolier Club 1984) 115; Renouard, Annales, Introd.
