Amst., Joannes Boekholt, 1685. 12mo. Modern red morocco, spine ribbed and richly gilt, with  gilt double fillet borders on sides. With richly engraved allegorical frontispiece, and  6 full-page engraved plates by Jan Luyken. (24), 518 (=520) pp.

First Dutch edition as well as the first illustrated edition of a very popular devotional work by John Bunyan, the Holy War, first published at London in 1682, unillustrated. The fine engravings by Jan Luyken also served  as a model for the subsequent illustrated English editions. The work, like the Pilgrim's Progress, is an allegory, the title heading the text reading: Den Heyligen Oorlog van El-Schaddai Tegen Diabolus, and tells the story of the fight of the imaginary founder of a fictitious city against a giant demon.
Joannes Boekholt introduced the works of John Bunyan in the Netherlands, publishing five different works by Bunyan  between 1682 and 1687. In the present privilege, dated 1684, the publisher is held to publish the works as they are, without changes or omissions, and to present one copy of each book, well bound and in good condition, to the University at Leyden. The present first edition is extremely rare.

Fine copy.- (Old owner's ms. entry on title; few ms. notes on first free endpaper and verso front.; some sl. traces of use).
