With 7 numbered full-page beautifully hand coloured engraved plates depicting many snails by G. Sibelius after the drawings by A. Schregardus. VI, 7-52 pp. Two interesting works bound together, one on the hippopotamus and the other on several species of snails. Ad 1: A separately issued part from Buffon's Algemeene en byzondere natuurlijke historie. 17 vols. (Amsterdam, J.H. Schneier, 1773-1785; vol. 18: Dordrecht, A. Blussé, 1793; vols. 19-26: Amsterdam, J. Allart, 1801-1807): the Dutch translation and adaptation of Buffon's Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière, in the edition in 38 vols. with 1122 plates: Amsterdam J.H. Schneider (& Dordrecht, A. Blussé), 1766-1796 (Nissen 678). The original French edition had been published in 36 vols. with 1055 plates in Paris1746-1788 (Nissen 672). The present issue is translated by C. van Engelen and has the same plate as in the French edition published by Schneider in Amsterdam. New in this Dutch translation are many original additions and on p. 18-24 a very interesting description J.C. Klockner, physician in Amsterdam of the preparation and stuffing of a dead hippopotamus that was shipped from the Cape of Good Hope to Amsterdam to be part of the collections of the Prince of Orange. Ad 2: Edition of the Dutch translation after the second German edition of Versuche mit Schnecken (Regensburg 1770; first edition 1768/1769) by Jacob Christian Schaeffer. It is an account of many experiments executed on several species of snails to prove that the heads, including the antennas, grow again after decapitation. Jacob Christian Schaeffer (1718-1790) was a German botanist, zoologist, theologist and celergyman and signed the preface in Regensburg on 4 September 1768. Good copies.
