Very rare German translation after the second Dutch edition of a sixteen year travels in the Indies (with the title Zestien jaarige reize naa de Indiën (Haarlem, Bosch, 1757; first edition: Haarlem, 1744 with the title Aanmerckelyke ontmoetingen in de zestien jaarige reize naar de Indiën), together with the unfortunate voyage of Jacob Franken in the years 1756-1760.
Jacob de Bucquoy (1693-?)  was a traveller, surveyor and cartographer for the Dutch East India Company (VOC). After having travelled a lot throughout Europe as a cartographer, he left in 1720 for the Cape of Good Hope. The work is full of remarkable adventures, especially the occurrences during his voyage to Rio de la Goa, where he was attacked by pirates, the office seized, and he and his companions forced to accompany his captors to sea, and to sail with them. Their treatment on the ships, and how they were landed at Madagascar. Their three year stay on the island and how the same pirates returned to the island in a much smaller boat as their large vessel was wrecked, how they wandered the African and Malabar coasts until only he and two of his fellow travellers, after many privations, arrived at Batavia; his stay there and further travels. With remarks on the topography of the countries, the customs of the people, etc. In 1735 Bucquoy returned to the Netherlands were he became a teacher in geography and sailing directions.
Of special interest is the account of the formation of the Dutch trading station at Delagoa Bay, now Maputo Bay (Baia de Maputo), an inlet of the Indian Ocean on the coast of Mozambique (see the map and plate in our edition). In 1720 the Dutch East India Company built a fort and factory called Lijdzaamheid (Lydsaamheid) on the spot of Lourenço Marques (now Maputo), since April 1721 governed by an Opperhoofd (Chief facor), under authority of the Dutch Cape Colony, interrupted by Taylor's pirate occupation April 1722 ; in December 1730 the settlement was abandoned.
The unfortunate voyage of Jacob Franken with the ship de Naarstigheid was first published at Haarlem in 1761. It describes the voyage from Batavia along the coast of Bengalen to Holland in the years 1756 - 1760, with the horrible storms along the way, making it a wonder to have survived. It contains the descriptions of Bengalen, the 26 months stay at Rio de la Goa, the east coast of Africa and Cape of Good Hope.
