Second edition, published a month after the first edition, of an educational biography of the Lieutenant General and Governor of Gibraltar, who in 1782-1783 had successfully defended Gibraltar against a Spanish attack. Born in 1718 Elliot was still alive when his biography appeared. The author, who signed his name to his prefaces, Johann Nicolaus Carl Buchenröder, also edited a periodical, "Der Soldat", intended to educate young soldiers into courageous fighters. Young people of noble families, both in Germany and in England, were traditionally encouraged to choose a military career.
Of interest is also the added historical and geographical description of Gibraltar. Gibraltar was in those days in the hands of England, but England then was ruled by the active King George III (1760-1820), who was of German origin and married to a German princess. The book contains two prefaces, for the first and the second edition. The first edition had been published in 1500 copies only, and the second edition, published in 2000 copies, was enlarged with several poems in praise of Elliot. These however, the publisher promised in the second preface, were also sold separately for those who had bought the first edition.

Fine copy.- (Binding very sl. rubbed).
