Edinburgh, printed for Waugh and Innes, 1820. 8vo. Contemporary boards with printed title label, kept in modern morocco-backed box by Root & Sons. With folding engraved chart and 2 plates. IX, [3], 256, [2] pp.

First edition of this account of shipwreck and survival. With some 280 passengers on board, the Winterton sailed from England in May 1792, bound for Madras and Bengal. In August the ship struck a reef off Madagascar and was wrecked in the course of events. Some 40 passengers drowned, but most passengers somehow managed to reach Madagascar. The survivors resided in the island for nearly seven months, during which period another 100 or so died of disease. The author, however, was able to study the geography and natural history of Madagascar, as well as the culture of its inhabitants. After a stay at Mozambique (of which as short description is given), the passengers eventually reached Madras.
The author quotes several passages from Captain Dale's manuscript narrative of the same voyage, and includes some interesting observations on the king of Madagascar and his court.
The present copy has a dedication and some pen corrections by the author's wife (?), including naming her husband as author on the title page.

With a bookplate of Lauriat Jr; spine cracked; boards rubbed; some tears, stains and foxing. Good uncut copy of a captivating narrative with an interesting provenance.
Huntress 203C; cf. Halkett & Laing IV, p. 152.
