Florence, (colophon: Giunti), 1552. Small 8vo (15.5 x 10.2 cm). 19th-century red half morocco, gilt and ribbed spine, blue edges. With woodcut printer's device on title and verso colophon, woodcut initials. [1], 2-86, [1= colophon] ll.

First edition of a 'defense of women', by Domenico Bruni di Pistoia (fl. 1540-1550s). In four books he critically discusses the vices and virtues of women attributed to them by earlier writers. He cites exemplary actions of Judith, and the queens of the Amazons. In the fourth book he mentions that women are more excellent than men on many occasions. The book is dedicated to Eleonora de Medici di Toledo, Duchess of Florence (1522-1562) and Bruni celebrates the Duchess herself as 'donna illustre', offering her as a contemporary exemplum of a long list of virtues appropiate to the wife of a ruler. He draws flattering comparisons between a contemporary aristocratic woman and heroines of the past. A second edition was published in Milan by Antoni in 1559.

First 3 ll. restored in upper margin, leaves 4-6 with small wormhole in uppermargin not affecting text; binding slightly bumped; some staining. Good copy of an interesting work discussing the position of the Renaissance lady.
