First edition of a work by the Walloon minister Jean Brun (Johannes Braun; 1628-1708) on, and defence of, the 'true' Dutch reformed religion, Calvinism. Brun wrote the book against the 'infamous book by the Swiss officer, commanding the French garrison at Utrecht, 1672-3, Giovanni Battista Stoppa (Jean-Baptiste Stoupe; 1623-1701) attacking Calvinism, denouncing Dutch tolerance and attacking Spinoza. The title of Stoupe's book is La réligion des Hollandois (Paris 1673, and Cologne, 1673, there are translations into German and Dutch). This book is also very important for the history of Dutch tolerance and religious circumstances in the Republic, and so is the counter attack by Brun, defending Dutch tolerance. On Stoupe's insinuation that the Dutch authorities were excessively tolerant towards Spinoza, Brun reminded readers that the Regents had sought to suppress the Tranctatus.

An anonymous reaction against Stoupe appeared already the next year in German: Gründtlicher Bericht Der Hollander Religion und andere obschwebende Welt-Händel betreffend: uber sechß Epistelen, so vor etliche Monathen auß Utrecht an einem Professori Theologiæ zu Bern in der Schweitz geschrieben, und in der Welt verspreyt worden. S.l., 1674. 4°, also in Dutch translation: Grondig bericht van de godsdienst der Hollanders, strekkende tot wederlegging van zeker ongenoemt schryver. Translated from the German. Amsterdam, 1674. In 1675 this present second attack was published.

After the title, dedication to the Prince of Orange (William III) by Jean Brun, dated Nijmegen, 1 December 1674 (pp. (3-22)), Preface (pp. (23-40)), follow the parts: 'La veritable religion des Holandois' (pp. 1-76), 'Apologie pour la religion des Estats Generaux des provinces unies (pp. 79-392), 'Le conseil d'extorsion ou La vollerie des françois. Exercée dans la ville de Nimègue. Par le Commissaire Methelet & ses supôts. Par I.B. (= Jean Brun; pp. 1-139)'. Added are 4 pp. with an 'Addition à la page 44', numbered (194)-(197) expanding on the vices of Methelet, with corrections on verso of the last page. These 4 pp. are lacking in some copies.

Good copy.
