Very rare first and only edition of a work in honour of Charles van den Bosch (1597-1665) on the occasion of his consecration as bishop of Bruges, edited by the Jesuit College at Bruges.
On 23 July 1651 (die Apollinaris) two bishops were consecrated in Bruges: Charles van den Bosch as bishop of Bruges and Andreas Cruesen as bishop of Roermond. Van den Bosch was the ninth bishop of the diocese of Bruges which was established in 1560. The consecration took place in the see of the bishop, the Cathedral of St. Donaas at Bruges.
At the time the famous Dutch poet Joost van den Vondel was in Bruges and he wrote a poem on this consecration: 'Bisschoppelijcke Staetsi Der E. Heeren Karolus en Andreas, gewyt tot Bisschoppen Van Brugge en Roermont', published as a broadsheet in 1651 (Unger: Bibliographie, nr. 485).

This occasional publication includes laudatory poems and emblems, glorifying Bruges, the bishop's virtues and other persons:
p. 3-6: Elegy on the consecration of Charles van den Bosch as the ninth bishop of Bruges in 1651.
p. 7-9: Congratulation.
p. 10-13: Emblem and ode on the Cathedral of St. Donatianus at Bruges, the cathedral in which Van den Bosch was consecrated.
p. 14-17: Emblem and ode on the famous Bruges relic with the blood of Christ.
p. 18-21: Emblem  and ode 'in erroribus ac vitiis arguendis intrepidam ...D. Chrysostomi libertatem'.
p. 22-25: Emblem and elegy on D. Eligius, 'Flandorum inter primos apostolus'.
p. 26-29: Emblem and ode on Bonifacius.
p. 30-33: Emblem and elegy on Carolus Borromaeus.
p. 34-47: 6 Emblems on the coat-of-arms of Charles van den Bosc:  'In gentilitia eius insignia lusus hieroglyphicus': p. 34-5: introduction; p. 36-7: emblem 'Ad crucem & lilia. Perfectio status episcopalis'; p. 38-9: emblem 'Ad crucem & lilia. Doctrina apostolica' (emblem with map of Bruges and environment); p. 40-1: emblem 'Ad crucem. Sollicitudo episcopalis'; p. 42-3: emblem 'Ad crucem & liliaa in aureo fundo'; p. 44-5: emblem 'Ad crucem separantem lilia à floribus mespuli. In discernendo prudentia'; p. 46-7: emblem 'Ad crucem. Fortitudo'.
p. 48: Chronogram, referring to '1651'.
p. 49-60: Text and poem on the father Petrus van den Bosch (1557-1614), the father of Charles van den Bosch.
p. 61-65: Ode on Andreas Cruesen (1591-1666) who was consecreted as the fourth bishop of Roermond at the same day as Charles van den Bosch.
p. 66-67: Ode on Antonius Triest (1577-1657), bishop of Ghent (1620-1657), who had been the fifth bishop of Bruges from 1616-1620.
p. 68-69: Ode on Gaspar Nemius (1588-1667), bishop of Antwerp.
p. 70-71: Ode on Jacobus de la Torre (1608-1661), vicar apostolic of the Dutch mission and titular bishop of Efese, living in Brussels.
p. 72-73: 'Plausus musicus convivalis': poem, with musical scores, sung during the official dinner on the occasion of the consecration.

Our copy has a very interesting provenance: it was presented by bishop Charles van den Bosch himself to Andreas van Bogaerde (1609-1652) who was alderman in Bruges at the time: 'Hoc premium datum Andree van Bogaerde ... a perillustri ...Carolo vanden Bosch ... Gymnasium Collegii Societatis Jesu 1651'. In 1858 the copy was sold at the auction Vervisch (lot 2508) and was later in the possession of the bibliophile Charles van der Elst.
Good copy, with ex-libris of Charles van der Elst pasted on inside front cover and monogram 'VA' in ink, Ms. ownership's entry in ink dated 1651 on inside front cover (see above), and annotation on inside back cover: '1858. Bruges. Vente Vervisch nr. 2503'.- (Somewhat loose in binding).
