Text vol.: XI, 311 pp. Rare first and only edition of an extensive and very well illustrated manual on (rail-)road-engineering, especially on the strengthening and consolidation of the banks along highways, canals, and railways. The work is written from practical experience by a French civil engineer and head of the French Eastern railways, and contains several new inventions and techniques. It is extensively illustrated in a separate atlas-volume. R. Bruère was the pupil of the famous railway and road engineer Sazily, whose methods he further developed and improved. In fact the work is also a continuation and improvement of the Nouveau Portefeuille de l'ingénieur of M. Perdonnet who has written a preface to Bruère's book (p. V-VII).
