New edition of the popular and well-illustrated history of the Highlands and the Highland Clans, first published between 1835 and 1838, by James Browne (1793-1841). Browne was educated for the ministry of the Church of Scotland at the University of St. Andrews, where he specially distinguished himself in classics. Later he decided to study law, taking his second degree at St. Andrews in 1826. Still, Browne then decided to devote himself entirely to literature and he became editor of the "Scots Magazine" and later of the "Caledonian Mercury". He wrote a number of books on Scottish history, but the present was his main work, still of interest today.
