Bertin, ministre; accompagnés de notices explicatives, historiques et littéraires.      Paris, Demonville for Nepveu, 1811. 6 parts in 2 vols. 18mo. Contemporary dark green grained morocco, spines richly gilt in compartments, elegant gilt borders on sides with fleurons, vases, and other ornaments, gilt inner dentelles, g.e. (CHILLIAT). 100 full-page and 8 folding engraved plates in beautiful contemporary hand colouring. XXXVI, 144; (4), 172; 188; (4), 220; (4), XXIII, 236; (4), 234, (4) pp. First edition of this famous work on Chinese daily life, art and costume. The work "originated in the activities of Bertin, secretary of State, 1762-80, who had responsibility for the Compagnie des Indes and French Jesuits in Peking. He was a generous supporter of the Jesuits and got two Chinese converts to take science courses in France. On return to China, they produced some 400 drawings of arts and crafts, thus moving outside the usual narrow missionary interests" (Lust). Breton de la Martinière's work is very much sought after on account of the quantity and quality of its 108 beautiful hand coloured illustrations, which vibrantly record the whole range of Chinese society, especially tradesmen. Particularly interesting are the numerous depictions of itinerant salesmen and craftsmen with ingenious methods of transporting their inventories and machinery.
