Travel adventures of the first Swedish feminist
BREMER, Frederika.Italiƫ in zijn natuur en volksleven, geschets. Uit het Hoogduitsch vertaald door W.C. Mauve. ![]() ![]() ![]() Haarlem, A.C. Kruseman, 1862. 2 vols. Contemporary boards. With 2 lithographed frontispeces, each showing 2 views, of Rome, Turin, and the mountain Baziglia. VI, 310; VI, 363, (1 blank) pp. First Dutch edition of one of the popular travel books by Frederika Bremer (1801-1865), a famous Swedish novelist and the first Swedish feminist. In her novels she stressed the importance of a sound professional education for girls, as she wanted every girl to be able to earn her own living and pursue her own career. Her travel books gave special attention to the position of women and to domestic life in the countries she visited. From 1849 to 1851 she travelled in America, and from 1856 to 1861 she undertook an extensive voyage through Switzerland, Italy and Palestine. Accounts of these voyages were published under the titles: "Life in the New World", and "Life in the Old World", our title belonging to the latter. Frederika Bremer was also an expert on Italy and the Italian language, publishing a Swedish translation of Dante's "Divinia Comedia" as well. Good copy.- (Spines sl. dam.).
