Original edition of Johannes Braun's illustrated 'Sacred Selections', divided in five books on a variety of subjects. Book I is on the addressees of the Epistles; Book II on the Seventh Seal (Apocal., chapter VIII); Book III on the Holiness of the High Priest; Book IV on chapter VIII and XIV of Ezechiel: 'De Thammuz', on the mourning of the deceased by the Jews, etc.; Book V contains five orations of Braun on (1-2) the wisdom of the Jews, (3) the elegance of the Hebrew language in the Old Testament, (4) on the delta of the Nile and (5) on the imposition of hands; (6-7) are letters by Braun written to Gisbertus Cuperus on (6) 'De Sambatheio', dated Groningen, 4 April 1691, and (7) 'De Deo Jaribolo', dated Groningen 31 January 1695.
The work is based on the lectures and disputations given by Braun in Groningen. A list of his students and participants is given on p. (9). The book starts with a dedication to the magistrate of Groningen, dated 13 December 1699 (pp. 5-23), followed by the preface (pp. 24-51), a laudatory poem by Adam Menso Isinck (pp. 52-53), Index, Nomina respondentium, and Contents. After the text (pp. 1-805) follow the indices, errata and Addenda.
Johannes Braun (1628-1708), German by birth, was a student of Constantijn L'Empereur in Leiden. After journeys to France, Germany and Switzerland Braun was appointed a Walloon minister in Delft and Nijmegen. In 1680 he succeeded Alting at the University of Groningen as professor of Theology and counted Schultens among his pupils. As theologian he was a follower of Coccejus, as philosopher a pupil of Descartes. In the line of Coccejus and Alting, he was called a 'judaisant', which means that Jewish tradition played an important role in his theology. All the works of Braun, for instance also his work on the clothing of the Jewish priests, De vestitu sacerdotum Hebraeorum (Amsterdam, Wetstein, 1701) show a close acquaintance with the Scriptures, an accurate knowledge of Jewish rites and customs, and great familiarity with Rabbinical learning.

Good copy with ownership's entries of (1) on the first fly-leaf:Johannes Conradus Ficher, Cantor and 'Schülmeister' at Lemgo and student of Braun in Goningen, dated 1728 (he is named as one of the 'respondentes' on p. (9)), and (2) on the title: Henricus Schinf.- (Some lvs. a bit loosening).
