Rotterdam, Barent Bos, 1708. 4to. Contemporary half calf, decorated and gilt spine with red morocco title-label and title lettered in gold, red speckled edges. Woodcut printer's device on title, woodcut initials, (8), 269, (9) pp.

First edition of this important work on the history of the jurisprudence held in 1618 and 1619 with regard to Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, Rombout Hoogerbeets and Hugo de Groot. The second edition was printed in 1710 and the third in 1721, also in Rotterdam. The historian Geeraardt Brandt (Amsterdam, 25 July 1626 -  Rotterdam, 12 October1685) became known by means of his tragedy on the history of Hamlet De Veinzende Torquatus (1645). In 1660 he became a Remonstrant preacher in Hoorn. This work is considered to be the principle work for later studies of these religious and political happenings, although it is quite Remonstrant tinted and therefore disputed by the Calvinists.
