By the designer of the first railroad in the Netherlands
BRADE, Willem Christiaan.Theoretisch en practisch bouwkundig handboek, ten dienste van ingenieurs, architecten, opzigters, timmerlieden, metselaars en verdere bouwkundigen. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Hague, A.J. & J.A. Van Weelden, 1827-34. 4 vols. 4to. Uniformly bound in contemporary half calf, modern marbled boards. Vol 1: Table in text, 24 numbered tables at the end; vol. 2: 18 folding engraved plates by J.C. Zurcher and Verbeke of foundations, brick- and stonework and wood constructions, 2 tables in text; vol. 3: 17 double-page engraved plates by J.C. Zurcher and Verbeke of the classical orders, and designs of various buildings (theatres, manor houses, town halls, etc.; vol. 4: Engraved frontispiece (90 x 125 mm) of the opening of the first English railroad, 2 folding engraved plates of (1) details of railroads and wheels and (2) one of the first locomotives, and 5 tables in text. XII, 178, (24); (4), IV, 192; (6), II, 71, (3); VIII, 166 pp. Rare first edition of the first Dutch handbook on building constructions, also including the architectural orders by the civil engineer and architect Willem Christiaan Brade (1792-1858). Apart from interesting sections on laying foundations (underpinning), masonry, wood constructions including the construction of staircases, illustrations of the classical orders and many designs of public as well of private buildings (town halls, theatres, manor houses, etc.), part 4 is of particular interest as it is devoted to the first railways which were under construction in those years. This last part is important because Willem Brade would be the designer of the first railroad built in the Netherlands, connecting Amsterdam with Haarlem, which was finished in 1840. Brade had been educated at the famous 'Ecole des ports and chaussées' at Paris. After having served the military as Captain-engineer since 1817, he established himself as an independent architect and civil engeneer in Amsterdam in 1819. An additional part to this series was published in 1844 (Amsterdam & The Hague, Van Cleef); a second enlarged edition appeared in 1842 in The Hague by the heirs of Dorman. Good set.- (Some soiling, browning, and staining, esp. the outer lower corners of vol. 3 ; plates of vol. 3 and quire M of vol. 4 misbound; right-hand part of plate 2 in vol. 3 missing).
Bierens de Haan 548-49 (vols. 3-4); Saakes 8 (1827), p. 330 t/m 12 (1844), p. 35.
