Rare first edition of the first Dutch handbook on building constructions, also including the architectural orders by the civil engineer and architect Willem Christiaan Brade (1792-1858). Apart from interesting sections on laying foundations (underpinning), masonry, wood constructions including the construction of staircases, illustrations of the classical orders and many designs of public as well of private buildings (town halls, theatres, manor houses, etc.), part 4 is of particular interest as it is devoted to the first railways which were under construction in those years. This last part is important because Willem Brade would be the designer of the first railroad built in the Netherlands, connecting Amsterdam with Haarlem, which was finished in 1840. Brade had been educated at the famous 'Ecole des ports and chaussées' at Paris. After having served the military as Captain-engineer since 1817, he established himself as an independent architect and civil engeneer in Amsterdam in 1819.
An additional part to this series was published in 1844 (Amsterdam & The Hague, Van Cleef); a second enlarged edition appeared in 1842 in The Hague by the heirs of Dorman.
