Holl. & West-Frisiae, De antiquo iure Reip. Batavicae. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Hague, Adriaan Vlacq for Johannes Vlacq, 1668. 12mo. Contemporary calf with gilt line alomh the edges, gilt corner pieces, spine gilt in compartments with title lettered in gold, gilt binding edges, g.e, marbled endpapers. (12), 202 pp. The 6th edition of this highly interesting treatise on the legal and political status of the Dutch Republic. Addressing the main political issues in the seventeen century Dutch Republic, the book provides a summary of the constitution of the Republic discussing i.a. provincial sovereignty, issues of State and Church government, international relationships, economics, practice of governance and the function of the stadholder. The work was first published in The Hague by Joh. Verhoeve in 1649; further editions in 1650, 1654, 1659. The first Dutch edition (Politijck handboexken van de Staat van 't Nederlandt) was published in 1650 (4th in 1652, 5th in 1660, 6th in 1674). The book deals not only with the legal, political and historical aspects of the Dutch Republic such as the history of the Union of Utrecht, the armies, finances, and foreign relations during the so-called 'Eighty-Years War', but also with economic life, such as taxes and the Dutch East India Company (pp. 117-39). On p. 135 for example, is a passage discussing slavery, and the employment of slaves on sugar plantations in Brazil. The work is of eminent importance for giving the crucial texts of treaties, instructions for high officials, oaths, etc. in extenso. Added is the 'Diatribe de statu Reipubl. Batavicae' (in Dutch the 'Kort verhael van den Staet der Republycke van Hollandt') van Paulus Merula (pp. 145-59). The 'Decretum Orduinum Hollandiae et West-Frisiae, de antiquo iure Reipublicae Batavicae', dated Haarlem, 16 October 1583, follows on pp. 160-74. Then the 'Articuli Pacis Unionis et Confederationis' (Unie van Utrecht, 1573) with an addendum dated 28 April 1654, on pp. 175-202. Marcus Zuerius Boxhorn (1602-1653), professor at the university of Leyden (1633; in 1648 he was appointed Professor Historiae, as the successor of the famous Daniel Heinsius), was a prolific author and was both nationally and internationally held in high esteem as a scholar. Paulus Merula (1558-1607) was Professor Historiae at the Leiden University from 1593 onwards; in 1603 he was Rector Magnificus. In 1598 he was appointed official historian of the States General. Good copy from the Macclesfield collection (Cat. 41).- ((Lower right-hand corner of first three lvs. water stained, some lvs soiled).
