On the coins of Ancient France by the intendant of Quebec

Contemporary full sprinkled calf, ribbed spine with red title label lettered in gold, covers with gilt central armorial piece of 'The Society of writers to the Signet' and gilt triple ruling, gilt binding edges and inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, g.e. Title printed in red and black with engraved allegorical vignette by N. Bonnart, showing a press for coinage, numerous engravings in text of which seven full-page (on pp. 336, 342, 349, 354, 359, 364 and 370), engraved headpiece and initial, woodcut head- and tailpieces. (16), 398, (1) pp. First and only edition of a treatise on the coins circulating in France since antiquity, describing the coins of the Jews, Ancient Gauls, and Romans, covering the period from the Gauls to the end of Merovingians, written by Claude Bouteroue d'Aubigny (1620-1680), antiquarian from noble descent. From 1654 Bouteroue was the advisor to the royal mint ('conseiller à la cour des Monnaies') and during the years 1668-1670 intendant of Quebec. In his preface ('Au Lecteur'), following the dedication to the King (Louis XIV, le Roi soleil), the author announces 3 other volumes to complete this history which were, however, never published (cf.
